  1. FIPSE

ASU is participating with five other universities in developing and teaching an International Environmental Masters in Environmental Science with an emphasis in biofuels and air pollution.  The other universities are University of Florence (Italy), University of Lisbon (Portugal), and Aston University (England), Baylor

University (Texas) and Embry-Riddle University (Florida).  The FIPSE grant provides students funding to spend up to a semester in Florence, Lisbon, or Birmingham.  Students may attend classes or do research with cooperating faculty in Europe and students from Europe will be attending the U.S. universities.

  1. Bioremediation of Dairy Wastewater

Animal wastes from CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations) are major sources of air and water pollution.  ETM faculty and students are working with local dairies on devising cost effective waste water treatment operations that can eliminate the need for holding ponds and reduce the ammonia and nitrates in wastewater.  The project involves use of the Environmental Technology laboratory and sampling from a nearby dairy.

  1. Used Oil Recycling in Mexico

Students are involved in devising a plan to reduce the unauthorized disposal of used oil from automobile repair shops in Nogales, Mexico.  This project involves interviews with local businesses, review of Mexican environmental legislation, demonstration and training for used oil testing, and development of relationships with Mexican and U.S. recyclers.

  1. Recharge wells

The U.S. EPA is funding Maricopa County Environmental Services to determine if an aquifer recharge project using treated wastewater is contaminating a nearby drinking water well.  An ETM student has designed the sampling plan to be submitted to EPA and will coordinate the sampling and analysis protocols.

  1. Alternate State Emergency Operations Center

Through a partnership between Arizona Division of Emergency Management and ASU on the Polytechnic campus, an alternate EOC has been built on the East campus that acts as a real world alternate for ADEM and as a training and research laboratory for ETM at other times. This is a first joint venture of this type in the United States.
