B.A.S. in Emergency Management
Distance Learning Option

General Information:
The M.S. in Technology degree, with a concentration in Environmental Technology Management, is available through a web based distance learning format. Three areas of study are available: Environmental Management, International Environmental Management, or Emergency Management. Students in this program will be part of a cohort group that begins each January and graduates 24 months later at the December ceremony.

This concentration requires an additional application.

Requirements:
Students in the distance learning cohort are expected to be working professionals in fields such as ES&H (Environmental, Health and Safety), environmental engineering, emergency management, national or local regulatory and permitting agencies, environmental law, environmental laboratories, education, etc. A variety of undergraduate degree preparation is appropriate, but students should have at least one course in inorganic and one course in organic chemistry. Evidence of a high degree of motivation will be expected for distance learning students. Further information on application procedures is found below.

Distance Learning Schedule and Curriculum
The cohort group will take two web based courses each fall and spring semester for four semesters. In addition, each cohort will be required to come to Phoenix for three days each January. At this time, the program requirements and expectations will be presented to the cohort, all faculty will be introduced, and the use of electronic tools for education and research will be explained. Essential concepts and specific "hands on" activities that could not be easily accomplished with distance learning will be presented. This will include laboratories, soil and groundwater sampling, emergency response incidents, etc. Nationally known keynote speakers will provide context and a vision of the future of environmental and emergency management.

No courses will be taken during the first summer, but following the third semester, cohort students will enroll for six hours of research and applied project credit during the second summer session of the two year degree. These will involve individualized work with a faculty member on an agreed upon topic that will be suitable for publication. Coordination with the faculty will be at a distance and not in person. However, in December of the following fall semester (the final semester), cohort students will return to Phoenix for a "capstone" experience. During this time, the student will defend his/her applied project. The schedule will be arranged so that students will be able to attend graduation if they desire.
